Mathematical Bare Bones: Getting Back to Basics

The cost of a variety of basic math supplies, including protractors and markers (from Quill Corporation, Delta Education, and ABC School Supply, Inc.) is $771, including shipping and <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.

You know the old saying, "Build it and they will come". Well, in my math classes I say, "Have it and they will do". I'm an eighth grade mathematics teacher in a Katrina-affected area of south Louisiana that has taken in displaced students and their families. I'm faced with a challenge much greater than most teachers today. Not only is teaching the basics of math demanding since the devastating hurricanes because of increased numbers and the diversity of students I now have, but having enough supplies to keep my students personally engaged in math activities is a challenge. I call this request my "getting back to basics" plea because I just need good old basic supplies like protractors, dry board erasers and markers, individual white boards, and rulers. These basic supplies are key to my students getting hands-on practice, which makes such a lasting difference in their progress throughout the year. Please consider this proposal for basic math supplies for my students. I need 180 protractors, rulers, and dry erase markers and approximately 35 individual white boards and erasers. I hope you will seriously give this "bare bones" proposal your consideration. Thanks!
