Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 8th grade math to 130 students, whose math abilities vary greatly. My students come to me with low or no confidence in their math abilities, but I see the potential in each and every one of them to be a great mathematician.
My goal is to build their confidence in themselves, not only in math class, but as students in general.
The sense of community is inspiring because of how strong it is which makes teaching these students so enjoyable. This was evident at how these students have continued to persevere after Hurricane Harvey. They have worked hard to come back from a short year, they challenge each other, encourage each other and comfort each other daily in whatever trials they face.
These students need and deserve a variety of learning opportunities given to them using all sorts of learning styles.
My Project
The use of math work stations has been shown to facilitate student guided learning. The workbooks will provide extra materials for me to help build their math stations. Students will use the workbooks to write out the steps to their problems and draw and show the work necessary to attain the correct answer. Checking and rechecking is a key role in math and my students would benefit greatly from these workbooks.
The manipulatives will provide different hands-on activities for the stations so the students can have a variety of ways to learn.
They will be able to see the work in front of them and touch geometric shapes and snap them together to create new shapes. The dry erase markers and erasers will provide my students with an opportunity to record their answers and be able to make it into a game so that they will be more excited while learning.
The tablet will provide the students with opportunities to draw and create digital 3D shapes. They will, in turn, be able to build and manipulate their shapes into projects to better understand applied mathematics in a whole new light
