My Students
I teach in a high poverty/low income area with a high population of English Language Learners (ELLs). Currently, I have 20 students in my class. My students love coming to school each day and seeing what's in store for the new day ahead.
Most of my students live in the same community where our school is located. Since we are in a rural area, transportation is an issue that many face. This limits their ability to access the public library and attend events in the community.
My Project
I believe it is important to bring literature into subjects other than reading and language arts. This project will bring trade books into the math curriculum and allow students to see that math is important in everyday life.
Books bring topics to life for students. I want to be able to have a selection of books available that deal with math topics that can be used to introduce various chapters of the curriculum. Abstract concepts such as addition, subtraction, comparing and measurement will become more concrete through the use of children's literature.
Math is an important subject that student's will use in some aspect of their lives every single day. I want to form a love of math within each of my students and the material in this project will begin to allow me to do just that- get my students to LOVE math!
