This year is my third year teaching. The school I work in has many kiddos who come from low income families and need all the support that I can give them. Many times I am asked to send home extra support and school supplies in order for the students to achieve. Even though my kiddos may face hardships they don’t let this bring them down and come to school every day with smiles on their faces and ready to learn.
The kiddos are very excited this year to spend math class doing hands on learning!
They are expanding their knowledge and learning self-discovery. This year has really put math into their hands and they are thrilled to become the leaders in the room.
My Project
The math manipulatives and tools that I have asked for are a HUGE part of our BRAND NEW math curriculum. This new curriculum is all about cognitively guided instruction and building on what the students already know to help them problem solve new things. Our goal is to put math into the hands of the students.
The whole math block is focused on student centered activities where the teacher quietly guides the students towards the point of the lesson.
Students learn by using the tools/manipulatives and student discussion. With this curriculum and hands on approach students are feeling more empowered and responsible for their learning.
