I am in my 2nd year teaching 8th grade Math and Algebra and this is the 2nd year that I am getting to teach a group that I taught when they were 6th graders! It was so nice to see their smiling faces when we returned to school!
This is my 2nd year teaching Algebra I and 8th grade Math, but my first year that I have 2 classes of 8th grade Math with special needs and ELL students.
In those classes, almost half are special needs. With this in mind, I have seen a greater need a hands-on approach to help students learn difficult concepts like geometric transformations on a coordinate plane and graphing linear equations. My students will have more meaning in making their own resources for Algebra and Math.
Having grid whiteboards for small group intervention available for students to create hands-on representations of graphs and transformations will be very beneficial. Many students struggle with these important Math concepts. Students enjoy having their own tools available in the classroom so they can decide what best helps them understand these sometimes-difficult concepts.
My Project
We will soon be teaching geometric transformations on a coordinate plane, which students have the most difficulty understanding rotational symmetry of 2 dimensional figures.
I have some transparent shapes for students to use, but need coordinate plane whiteboards, more dry erase markers, and the MIRAS would help students better visualize reflections on a coordinate plane.
The coordinate plane stamp will allow me to easily stamp a graph in a notebook or a student's paper for graphing equations practice and drawing transformations of geometric shapes. Students love using the whiteboards to sketch graphs in Algebra and 8th grade math, which is essential to understanding the change in independent and dependent variables. I buy many dry erase markers throughout the year for myself and my students. More markers and erasers would be very helpful in my classroom for students' hands-on learning.
