Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Math plays a huge role in our lives. In the buildings we work in, at the stores where we shop, and the recipes we bake, there is always math.
My students are an ambitious group of third graders who are part of a new charter school.
They absolutely love doing hands on math activities and applying what they learn to real world situations. Their strengths make them unique and their diverse learning styles make learning fun.
My Project
My students look forward to "math workshop" time every day. They love working in small groups while practicing learned skills, investigating new concepts, and working towards mastery. My students would be able to access these items and work collaboratively throughout the classroom. They light up whenever I introduce a new math activity, or give them manipulatives for hands on learning. They will also be able to use the Livescribe Echo pen technology to record themselves explaining their mathematical strategies.
These math manipulatives and activities would expand the technology and tools available to the students, while allowing them to appreciate the concepts of mathematics.
Children need to experience mathematics at the conceptual stage. Therefore, the use of these manipulatives will aide in building a strong foundation for their further understanding.
