Help me give my students the flexibility to enjoy comfortable seating while they learn the 6th grade math curriculum. These items are intended for daily use during Guided Math groups with students below basic to advanced abilities levels.
I teach sixth grade mathematics to students in a high poverty district. My student's abilities range from below basic to advanced. Several of my students have an Individualized Education Program (be in learning support, emotional support, etc.), and others have a 504 Plan (behavioral and/or academic). They need extra support each day, and an incentive to want to come to class to learn material that may not come easy to them.
I am known for giving the students flexible seating to create a learning environment that is inviting and entices them to come in to my classroom each day.
Students are eager to choose their seating options, and their choices change each day.
My Project
I try to ensure that my students have a learning environment that is safe and comfortable to learn each day, with a home-like feeling. I do not teach in a traditional classroom environment, giving them the flexibility to find an area and position that would be conducive to their individual learning. As my students enter my classroom they can choose to keep their shoes on, take them off, sit at desks, move to the floor with or without a pillow to complete their daily assignments.
I teach from my floor every day, so that I am at the same level as my 6th graders, so they feel comfortable with me as their learning facilitator.
This nontraditional way of teaching/learning has proven its effectiveness rounding out my first year in my new position. My students have stated that they appreciate having the flexibility to move around the classroom, in a position they feel comfortable while learning and when taking assessments.
I would like to give my students more options in my classroom for flexible seating. Ideally getting a variety of options that would work with my differentiated learning, with my classes ranging from team teach to mixed-level abilities.
Giving my students the flexibility to choice their own comfortable seating, gives them ownership of their learning environment. It helps them to learn their limits and teaches them to make responsible choices for their own learning abilities.
