Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"I certainly do care about measuring educational results. But what is an 'educational result?' The twinkling eyes of my students, together with their heartfelt and beautifully expressed mathematical arguments are all the results I need." - Keith Devlin
My classroom is located in the state of Washington at a Title I school.
Students at my school are hardworking, kind, eager individuals. Many students are first- and second-generation citizens from Africa, South America, and Asia. Our differing cultures, backgrounds, economic statuses, and languages provide richness in the classroom. However, we still face challenges. One challenge is that we are incredibly underfunded. There are so many learning experiences that I wish we could have with our students if we only had the means.
My Project
A math teacher is someone who inspires students to become problem solvers and critical thinkers. Every year, many of my 60 students and the 675 others at my school are struggling to learn math. This can be attributed to us, the teachers, rather than the students.
Math is my passion, and, as a lead math teacher at my school, I would love to spearhead professional development to help me and other teachers grow in their practice.
With your help, I could get professional development books into my school that would be so critical to helping me and other teachers become better. Students deserve qualified and educated teachers.
With better teachers, we will see our students scores rise, but, even more importantly, student understanding of math will increase. The books I'm asking for include Elementary and Middle School Mathematics: Teaching Developmentally, The Five Practices in Practice, 5 Practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematics, and other great titles. Please help make better teachers so that students get a better and more engaging education.
