I am a fifth grade math teacher in East Harlem. Approximately 80% of my students receive free or reduced lunch. I am a firm believer that literacy must be integrated into all subjects. As such, I would like integrate reading into my math class by reading math stories. Ask any math teacher about amazing math stories like The Grapes of Math, The Math Curse, and The Greedy Triangle, and they will tell you that no math class should go without! For almost every topic in math, a corresponding storybook exists to supplement lessons. Storybooks are engaging, fun, and best of all, trick students into doing mental math while listening. Furthermore, most clarify math concepts by illustrating concrete applications of topics like factorials, fractions and exponents. I plan to create a math library from which students can borrow books and teachers can select appropriate stories to integrate into their lessons. The library will be a lasting benefit that my school will enjoy for years to come.
