Help me give my students stories like Fractions in Disguise: A Math Adventure, Math Curse, The Toothpaste Millionaire and other books for teacher read-alouds that incorporate MATH concepts!
Hello! We are a 6th-grade class full of students getting ready to leave elementary school and move on to middle school. We are a Title I school, which means that more than 50% of our children receive free or reduced-price lunches because of financial need and low socioeconomic status.
Not every student has access to quality supplies that will last through the school year.
This has a direct impact on our classroom, as we receive a relatively small number of donations and have a limited budget for supplies. I want every student in my class, regardless of their background or status, to have high-quality supplies for projects.
My Project
All of our students enjoy read alouds by the teacher, and I want to bring them into Math Class! By incorporating Math Read Alouds for just 5 minutes per day, my students will begin to see what they are learning in new ways. They will get to sit back and listen, but be synthesizing 6th-grade math concepts into real-life situations.
We have a high percentage of English Learners who need to experience Language as they learn Math.
By using read-aloud books, like Math and Magic in Wonderland, The Candy Corn Contest, Do the Math: Secrets, Lies, and Algebra along with other books they- and all students- will hear math vocabulary and concepts in real sentences and conversation. They will see how fictional kids their age are using math to solve real-life problems in creative ways.
Because I have a variety of learning levels, I have selected a variety of Math read-aloud books: from picture books and books on basic fractions to long novels that incorporate viewing social situations in terms of functions and equations. I will have a variety of stories that I can use in small or large groups to not only reinforce what I am teaching, but to help encourage students who don't typically enjoy math to see it in new ways.
