Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Every student can learn, just not on the same day, or in the same way." - George Evans
I work in a low-income school district in Washington state where 100% of my students receive free meals at school.
My students are migrant learners who live on a reservation. They are eager to learn despite the odds they have against them in their lives. At our school, we do everything we can to help them be college and career ready. This includes being people who are hard workers and excited to learn.
My Project
As a school, we have dedicated a lot of training and collaboration time to developing guided reading and small group interventions for literacy. One area that we need to strengthen is our math support. My students are at an age where their minds still need to move objects to count before their brains can transition to more abstract thinking. One way to support that level of learning is in small groups.
Making changes to my math instruction by creating a system for small group work will help support the needs of students.
My students currently spend most of their math instruction in a whole group setting. This is completely the opposite of our literacy instruction. It is my hope to start requesting projects that can support the changes I want to make in the classroom and provide instruction for my students in smaller groups.
The ten frame boards will help students with the addition and subtraction strategies we use in first grade. My students work with numbers up to 20. Some students can easily manipulate numbers mentally. This resource would be beneficial for the groups of students who still need practice with seeing quantity and adding/subtracting.
The Versatile game boards would be used as a leveled game center where students are able to work independently or in partners. There are question books that students use to answer the math questions. The levels can be designated based on the students' understanding and they can work at their own pace. This will give them a deep thinking task to do while I work with other small groups.
Thank you for considering donating to our classroom. These resources will make a huge impact on our math learning!
