Do you remember when you were in elementary school and struggled with math? Imagine if you had exploratory tools that allowed you to engage your thinking and enrich your discussions with your classmates with confidence! My students come from diverse backgrounds and I would love to be able to support their various learning styles and interests with the resources in my classroom.
By providing a platform that goes beyond traditional learning, my inquisitive students can confidently engage in mathematical thinking and practices through discussions with one another.
Their love of learning permeates through everything they encounter, and as such, by building their conceptual understanding they can successfully apply their math skills.
These math manipulatives will enhance the mathematical practices that I strive to create in my classroom. By working with a daily number chart, every student will have the opportunity to express their thinking in a whole group setting as a warm-up. During centers, students are able to use the Hands On Addition Regrouping kit that makes complicated math problems easy to solve and visually compose and decompose numerical values through the use of tens-frames.
Additionally, students will be able to expand their young minds by working with money as they use the Jumbo Double-Sided Magnetic Money.
In developing their understanding of currency and currency exchange, students also become aware of the historical events connected to US currency.
My goal for this project is to enhance my students’ mathematical thinking in order for them to confidently navigate through the school year and successfully apply their love of math outside the realm of school.
