My students need 30 dry erase boards, markers and erasers.

I teach fifth grade math at a high-need urban charter school in New York. Making lessons fun isn't a novel idea, it's a requirement. Maintaining the students' attention to the math competes with all sorts of distractions: friendship drama, school rules, temperature fluctuations, family challenges, and even the most basic issues such as hunger, fatigue, or loneliness. So when I found that my students were excited and motivated by a game called Showdown, I jumped at the chance to implement it on (at least!) a weekly basis. Last week, it was "Order of Operations Showdown." The students turn over the top of a stack of math skills' cards. They apply the given skill to solve the problem presented on the card, but they keep their answers a secret. The teacher, or another leader, says, "Showdown!" Then, the students show their papers and the leader quickly offers a yes or a no on their answers. The group then partners up to help those who didn't understand the problem, and we all play another round with those kids who had trouble that much better prepared for the next round. This is just one example of the activities that could be made even more fun if my students had dry-erase boards on which to work out their answers, erase, and then start all over again. Your generous donation of a class set of boards, markers, and erasers links directly with students' motivation to really "do" math. These materials give the students a fun opportunity to show their thinking and problem solving skills. Even better, as their teacher, I'll be able to see their thinking and pinpoint misunderstandings throughout these activities. Cooperative games such as Showdown will be far easier to get going with these supplies.
