In first grade I try to make the learning hands on and fun. Learning has to engage the students in order for them to learn. I have used the reading rods to help students build words and sentences. I would like to purchase the Kindergarten Math Rods Kit and the Addition & Subtraction Math Rods Kit. These are colorful math rods that snap together to make picture story problems or number sentences. They also have number words to help the children make the correlation between the number and the number word. Each kit comes with 16 activity cards that work on picture problems, counting skills and basic operation (addition and subtraction) The children would start using the math rods by making number sentences using the picture blocks. Next they would make number sentences to match their picture blocks. This would help them understand the concept of addition and subtraction. It would also help them be able to distinguish between the two. My first graders have a hard time deciding when to add and when to subtract. The math rods would give them a concrete way to make the problems with pictures and with numbers. This activity can help with all my different leveled learners. They can be used in morning centers and in small group math groups with the activity cards. The math rods can help with their addition and subtraction facts as well as help them understand the concept of adding and subtracting.
