During their last year of elementary I believe my biggest responsibility as a teacher is equipping my students with the tools they need to become active learners who feel a personal responsibility for their own success.
I teach students how to be aware of their personal thinking processes and give them ample opportunities to share their learning processes with other students. I believe that learning does not happen until it can be experienced and talked about. Through games we take the fear out of learning and by doing so a giant wall instantly comes down and students learn more.
My Project
Every day students rotate through different math and literacy stations to learn by seeing, touching, and interacting with concepts. These games or if my principal asks "activities" provide time for my students to talk about these concepts with their friends and gain a deeper understanding. Fractions are a brand new concept for most of my students. Being able to use the two fractions activities that I am requesting will help students practice in a non-treating way. The geometry and number sense centers will do the same.
These "activities" will take the fear out of learning for my students.
They will approach the games with excitement and forget that they are learning and in turn will absorb more information than I could ever hope to teach them by simply telling them facts.
