First Grade students love and need to be active! Learning is most beneficial when they are able to use real objects. Imagine trying to learn how to solve written Math problems without understanding the concepts behind the number equations. My students fit this description perfectly.
My students want to be able to learn "on the move".
They are in need of materials that offer active learning opportunities to take place in small groups.
Our classroom is comprised of 26 students. Our school is located in a wonderful, rural town and serves grades K-8 with approximately 50 students in each grade. I am striving to provide my students with real life, tangible (concrete) activities before moving toward paper/pencil (abstract) activities. We are "on the move"!
My Project
My students need experience using manipulatives in order to help them understand and transition to solving abstract math concepts. Today's math standards demand higher level thinking skills that need to be obtained through practice with real objects/materials. The requested materials will help my students achieve those skills. The Geosolids, Cuisinaire Rods, Magnetic 10 Frames, Wipe and Write Fact Family Boards, 1-120 Pocket Chart, and Base 10 Blocks will be used by each student during teacher led small group instruction as well as during student led center activities. I am most excited to offer my students the use of Polyhedral Dice. These dice extend a natural means of differentiation. Differentiation is crucial to student success. The No Spill Organizer will be used to store the dice and the Sterlite Clip Boxes will be used to house the materials and activity descriptions. The students will use the Dry Erase Pockets to record their findings as they move to abstract concepts. All of the activities and centers will be game based progress from concrete to abstract. They will follow the Daily 3 and Guided Math formats. These formats are proven to reach each student's area of academic need.
The requested materials will help meet the individual learning needs of my students.
Each child learns at a different pace and needs real objects in order to be successful. The materials will provide versatile options as I plan activities based on their individual needs. The objects donated will help my students become confident, real life mathematicians.
