Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Third grade students and teachers at Edison Brentwood Academy (a primarily Hispanic and African-American urban school with 88% of students receiving free lunch) have worked hard this year to acquire basic skills in mathematics and are prepared to do their best on state tests. However, one problem we've experienced is our inability to get math walking as if it were a living, breathing entity.
While our teacher guidebooks and student journals contain excellent instruction outlines and practice problems, we want concepts to jump off the page, march around as if to say, "Here I am, marching into your brain with the intent of full occupation!" and take possession of our mental territory.
Therefore, we request manipulatives, games, hands-on materials, and real-world activities aligned to California state standards for third grade. Twenty students per year will benefit from their use. In turn, those twenty kids will become adults who can recognize, apply, and evaluate math concepts in real world situations, not just perform basic, repetitive skills. Ultimately, the reach of your help will extend to the greater population in the form of a better prepared workforce and disintegration of status quo in California's diverse population.
