When I first tell people that I teach in a middle school, I get the horrified and disgusted looks like I just brought their past school nightmares to life. I will admit, teaching young teens has its challenges but this is the most rewarding job. I specifically teach 8th grade Mathematics. My students make up is that of what you would think about a typical middle school class. There is a good mix of boys and girls, low and high mathematical abilities, and the haves and have nots when it comes to support/materials provided at home.
The one thing that my students need is variety in both seating and ways to work.
The majority of my students have difficulty focusing and sitting for long periods of time (a 7 hour school day). Each child in my classroom loves flexibility and movement even though it is a math class. They also love interacting with fellow students in my non-traditional classroom. I truly have a bond with these children and that is hard to achieve at their age! We are a close-knit family!
My Project
Flexible seating is something that is becoming more and more of a necessity in classrooms. With the items I have requested, it will become more of a reality to have the options of flexible seating for my kiddos.
I have many students who need the option of flexible seating in order to give them the best chance to focus in a math classroom setting.
The wobble seats give the student the ability to move around, while still in a seating position. The bouncy bands give a traditional desk a mobility feature that they normally would not have. And the pillows will allow the students to move and sit around the room where seating might not be an option now.
