My students are a community of Fifth graders representing one of the most diverse schools in our large urban city. We have over eight home languages represented as well as a variety of racial, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Our school community also draws in families from all socioeconomic levels. This creates a unique and beautifully colorful experience for all of our students.
Our students are hardworking and academically motivated, especially in science, writing, and reading.
They also love math, dancing, gardening, creating art projects, playing four square and kickball. Our Fifth graders are curious and engaged learners who desire hands-on and adventurous learning experiences.
My Project
After visiting another school site and watching them teach fabulous math lessons, I realized that I needed to step up the math notebooking game in my classroom. The students in these lessons used their notebooks efficiently and effectively. It was obvious that these notebooks were an integral part of their math skill development. The obvious first step to improving our notebooking game is starting with the right math notebooks.
We need grid paper notebooks that will allow students to practice precision and accuracy when drawing and utilizing mathematical models, specifically for important Fifth Grade content like fractions and decimals.
When students can create more accurate models, their conceptual understanding grows exponentially. I strongly believe that these notebooks will assist my students in improving their math skills.
