I teach math to a diverse population of 8th grade students who are eager to learn. The activities I use in my classroom encourage students to think, collaborate and expand their knowledge. They have fun doing the math.
Students need to include movement in their learning every 20 minutes.
Activities that integrate movement with the math help students gain a deeper understanding through kinesthetic learning.
My students are very diverse learners. English Language Learners and students with learning challenges comprise 25% of my classes. In addition, over 40% of my students qualify for Free and Reduced. These students persevere through their challenges while engaging in the math. Through my 20+ years of teaching I continue to find ways to adjust my practices to help them grow and achieve.
Studies have shown that students learn best when given the opportunity to move every twenty minutes. Many of our learners are kinesthetic learners so they learn best through the incorporation of daily movement. Some of our learners have attention challenges and movement helps to keep them engaged in the math. Eighth grade standards include many concepts that require students to understand and use the coordinate system.
Life-sized coordinate system floor mats will engage and teach students math through movement.
Students will be able to demonstrate and develop a deeper understanding of linear and nonlinear functions, transformations and systems of equations through life size interactions. These mats will be used for whole class and small group instruction.
