My school is located in a rural area on the outskirts of a major city. My students come from many different backgrounds and diverse areas of the country. We are near a Coast Guard base and have several students that have relocated from other areas. I am a newly converted eighth grade teacher that decided, thanks in part to having my son, that I would like to teach elementary school. Unfortunately, that leaves me in quite a bind for grade-level appropriate materials and activities for my students.
I would like the opportunity to provide my students with resources that will grab their attention by offering many varied hands-on activities and books, while also providing vocabulary and comprehension on their level through multiple manipulatives, books, and games.
I would hate for my students to suffer because of my decision to drop four grade levels to teach. These students are deserving of the best and I am hoping that you can help me offer it to them!
My Project
In this project, I have requested a variety of manipulatives and games that will help my students understand the concept of place value. Some of these items are needed for teaching the concept, like the place value coins. When I begin to teach the concept, students will receive random place value coins that will help them put together a number. It will allow them to see how expanded form goes hand in hand with place value. Other items will help make reviewing place value more engaging and entertaining, like place value bingo. After teaching the concept, the class will play Place Value bingo so they can get additional practice through a fun game instead of a worksheet. This will provide multiple practice questions without feeling like an overwhelming amount of work. Math can be a very tricky subject to teach and understand. I have noticed the area of place value, which is taught at the beginning of the year, is especially difficult for students. I am hoping with these tools my students will be more successful!
