Help me give my students a Tens Frame Class set, Power Pens, Addition and subtraction Power Pen Quiz Cards, Addition and Subtraction Roll and Solve games, Dominoes, and a hundreds class size pocket chart.
My kindergarten class is full of inquisitive, eager, and energetic learners who come to class every day ready to learn. The ambition and drive that these individuals possess is amazing for any teacher who interacts with them! The impulse to ask vital questions, to critically investigate, to anxiously explore, to meticulously examine, and to carefully experiment comes from a burning curiosity about the world in which we live in and a strong desire to understand things we experience daily...by any means necessary!
As an educator you know that hands-on experience really makes learning come together. Teachers know that building, creating, and doing are an integral part of the learning process. When students learn to use dominoes to addition or subtract , use dice or counting bears to count and model or decompose numbers using models and manipulatives, they are dealing with concepts in the real world rather than in a book or a pencil-and-paper problem. They are acquiring knowledge through experience rather than abstraction and using a greater range of intelligence to solve problems. Multiple studies have found that learning by doing leads to greater achievement across subject areas.
Having access to addition and subtraction quiz cards, Power Pens to enhance the hands on learning experience and base ten rods to explore the wonderful world of place value, creates the vision of becoming a math scholar and embracing the perspective that Math Matters!
