Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have an amazing group of first graders. They are working hard mastering many things, one of which is English. Most of our students live below the poverty line. Our district is struggling with shrinking funds and growing class sizes.
Families struggle to provide basic school supplies and uniforms for their children.
Teachers are dedicated to providing the best education and opportunities for our kids. We reach deep into our own pockets.
We wish we had deeper ones, but we have some of the lowest salaries in the nation. DonorsChoose.org and similar grants have allowed us to try and give our students the same opportunities as their peers in surrounding communities.
My Project
My dual language learning students not only enter first grade with a literacy deficit, but often have trouble with basic numeracy. This fluency kit provides daily lessons that instill a good foundation of number sense for students.
We currently have no math curriculum.
It is up to grade level teams to create lessons to address the district's math standards. The structure provided by this kit will help us deliver the necessary knowledge and skills to our students.
We have put a great emphasis on literacy, but the importance of STEM subjects should not be ignored. Students need to be proficient in all subjects.
