The students in my classroom are energetic and excited about the world around them. After Hurricane Maria made landfall in September, our school received an influx of students from families who were displaced due to her destructive nature. These students had to deal with the emotional stress of leaving their home and familiar surroundings to come to a new land. Furthermore, this entails being enrolled in our school, where they now have to make new friends, and for some, learn a new language. Now my teaching has to adapt to meet the academic needs and backgrounds of my learners. My goal is to create a learning environment that allows my students to achieve their academic goals in kindergarten.
My students are eager to learn and explore the world around them, as they begin their journey on the path to a formal education.
My goal as a primary educator is to facilitate the learning needs of my students as they navigate and explore new content, skills and strategies. I differentiate lessons based on my student’s prior knowledge and each child’s learning style and need.
My Project
There are five math content areas that the Kindergarten curriculum focuses on: Number Sense (numbers and counting), Data and Measurement, Geometry, Fractions, and Computation (addition and subtraction). The hands-on manipulatives and engaging activities will be a wonderful addition to my current classroom teaching resources. The items that are being requested, will be used to enrich all five of the math content areas.
Research shows that even our youngest learners will gain a deeper understanding of various mathematical concepts through hands-on activities and the use of manipulatives.
The measurement centers will allow students to practice beginning measurement concepts as they explore simple investigations. The Power Pens and activity cards will allow students to independently practice skills and strategies, while receiving immediate feedback. The listening center will be utilized during small group rotations. Four students will be able to utilize the listening center, while practicing one of twelve different skills. The math folder game set will be used to investigate targeted skills and get hands-on practice. The giant ink pads will be used by students to demonstrate and practice adding and subtracting, by using the various stamps at the math center.
