Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My current group of 7th and 8th grade special education students love working with technology, books and materials to help them succeed. My students are hard working despite their learning and behavior issues. Imagine coming to school and knowing you struggle. Now, on top of academic challenges, they suffer from anxiety, stress, fear, etc. My students live this struggle everyday; despite that struggle, they look forward to coming each and every day and they try very hard to do well. Struggling academically sometimes makes school the last place they want to be. When my students are able to learn through "cool" means, they feel more connected and are excited to leave their general education classrooms and enter the special education resource room.
I try my hardest to make learning fun and unique so that they do not feel discouraged when being pulled out of the general education class.
My students have a difficult time in both reading and math. We do not have a lot of supplies to help them learn and therefore have to make our own or find materials from years ago that are outdated. Some of the books and manipulatives we use are so outdated that pages are torn out or written on and the stuff just doesn't look like it was cared for. I want to portray the fact that learning is important and should be a main priority in my students' lives. Using materials that look old and not cared for can reflect that learning is not important.
I plan to have the students take care of the materials and show that they are taking ownership in their learning. They will learn responsibility and will be responsible for these items. They will need to set them up, clean them up, and put them away.
In Their Own Words
Hi! We sometimes have trouble learning math so we asked our teacher if we could get new stuff to help us learn. When she said yes, we decided to request new items so that that we can use the stuff to learn math better. We will be able to learn a bunch of math topics so that we can be better students today and in the future. We love math and love the items we chose. We are excited to use them. We know they will help us become better with math and learn all the math we are going to need.
We will take good care of these things. We will unpack them, set them up, clean them and make sure everyone takes care of them. If something is damaged, we will tell our teacher and try to fix it. We will make sure to take good care of the things because we want to use them again and want others to use them too.
This project is important because math is important. We need to learn different math skills so that we can graduate and go to high school and college and get good grades. We want to get good jobs and we need to know a bunch of math for good jobs. Our teacher says that math will be with us forever so we want to start learning more about math now.
