My students need hands-on manipulatives such as dice and ten frames, math center activities and puzzles, and paper trays to conceive and apply numeric and analytic strategies and concepts.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
What's your learning style? In our classroom, we learn by doing! My young scholars love to work with manipulatives and hands-on activities during daily learning centers. I want to harness that interest to help my scholars master their skills in geometric, arithmetic, and algebraic thinking.
My scholars are extraordinary young people growing up in challenging circumstances.
They come from low-income families and many are homeless. Far too many of my scholars have been exposed to violence, abuse, and other traumatic situations. However, in our classroom, each and every one of them knows they are a "shining star" who is extremely cherished and loved!
Even though my scholars battle learning disabilities and impoverished circumstances, their determination and perseverance to master a new skill or acquiring new knowledge is inspiring. They love to work with one another during learning centers and take tremendous pride in their accomplishments.
My Project
Manipulatives and interactive math center activities will help my students enhance their math skills while simultaneously building their critical-thinking and problem-solving skills. They will need these invaluable skills to be successful in life.
With organizational materials such as paper trays and a center's chart, my students will be able to clearly identify their center and manage math center materials appropriately while transitioning through classroom centers. While at math learning centers, my students will use the ten frames and dice manipulatives to gain a new, deeper understanding of mathematical concepts and strategies. Additionally, these hands-on activities such as fraction puzzles will provide my students with fun and engaging math experiences which will foster an appreciation for exploring math in innovative ways. All activities are Common Core aligned instructional tools which will lay the groundwork for my students to be successful in math for years to come.
Math is one of the most imperative subjects to master in school, and laying a solid foundation early is vital.
This project will greatly impact ALL of my students by making math accessible, regardless of their abilities. These manipulatives and math materials will arm my diverse learners with an exciting variety of powerful, hands-on tools that they need to make math come to life, right in their own classroom! I cannot provide everything my students need, but together, we can make a difference!
