Help me give my students the supplies every math class needs to be engaging and successful - protractors, rulers, chart paper, patty paper (for transformations!), and cardstock for our word wall.
Middle schoolers are amazing. They're young enough that they're still enthusiastic about everything, and they're old enough to be aware that the choices they make every day will impact them in the future.
A big part of my job as a middle school teacher is building the skills of self-awareness and self-advocacy in each of my students.
I teach them to think about and understand what they need to be successful and how to get the supports they've identified.
Our school has a diverse grouping of students learning English as a new language, students with physical and learning disabilities, and students from every socio-economic background you can imagine. What do all of these kids have in common? Each and every one of them can learn. Each and every one of them can be successful. Each and every one of them is cared for in our school. Each and every one of them is special to me.
My Project
Let's face it, math is very rarely a student's favorite subject. When parents give donations to their children's schools, the money usually goes to arts and sports programs. I get it. People want to put their money where their children are happiest, and very few children have a driving passion for math.
Math is essential and it doesn't have to be difficult or boring.
Students need engaging activities and well-stocked classrooms as a foundation for solid math instruction. We strive to provide our math students with meaningful, leveled, standards-based math activities that help them develop their problem-solving skills and pique their curiosity. We work hard to support all learners with anchor charts, an interactive word wall, and the math tools they need to make sense of the content we're learning.
We need to round out our stocks on some of the math basics - rulers and protractors for every student in the classroom are a must. Post-its and cardstock help us to create an interactive, color-coded, and useful word wall. Grid chart paper is essential for our graphing and algebra work, and patty paper is a must when working with transformations.
