This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a teacher in a 99% low income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Regardless of the challenges that they are faced with each day they are worthy and deserving of a high quality and meaningful learning experience.
My students are energetic, creative and so spontaneous.
They love to read, write and problem solve. They love lots of positive attention. Many are raised in a single parent household and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. I strive each and every day to keep my students growing both socially and academically. I may not be able to control their home lives but I can certainly control their experience during the school day. I am hopeful to inspire my students to continue on a path to academic success.
My Project
My students need math games and manipulatives to enhance our differentiated math centers and small group instruction. The math games would strengthen my students skills and understanding in the areas of fractions, measurement and data, as well as place value and numbers and operations. My students need intensive instruction and interventions based upon their standardized tests and my classroom observations during math instruction. My students will be able to utilize these materials to grasp these concepts while applying various learning styles. They will also have fun while they are learning.
The funding of this project would lead to a greater understanding and mastery levels of math standards and skills.
There are many gaps that need to filled to improve the mastery levels of my students performances in math. I truly believe that these math kits and games would be the tools we need in becoming "Math Masters"!
