Help me give my students three iPads for our classroom to use in our math and reading blocks. This will give us enough iPads to use with a full math group as we continue to become Math Masters.
We are the Warriors, the mighty, mighty Warriors. If you attend any sporting event that is what you will hear chanted at our school. My students are mighty. They have a fighting spirit. They love to explore, discuss and experience learning in a variety of ways.
I teach in a small rural Southwest Virginia School and want to encourage my students in building a strong math foundation.
My students love math when they get to manipulate materials and I can incorporate activities and games that help them practice math skills while having fun.
My Project
Teaching in a rural community in Southwest Virginia, I have spent 18 years of teaching buying needs and wants for my classroom out of my own money. This fall, I was given the opportunity to use the Reflex Math program for free for a year. This is a $1,300 program that helps students improve their math fact fluency, a need I saw since so many of my students was lacking in a skill that is needed for them to be successful in math. This is a game based program that makes practicing their facts fun in a video game format. One of the requirements of this program is that students must use the program at least three times a week. I was very anxious about meeting this requirement because at my school I only have four iPads for 16 students. I was not sure how it was going to be possible to give each of them the time needed to be successful with the program.
Through your donation, I will be able to give more students access to the program each day and help them build their math confidence and fact fluency.
In the two months that my students have used the iPads and Reflex Math program, my class of 16 students has solved 60,759 facts. It is amazing to see how much impact it has had on each student's math confidence and fact accuracy. One student I was extremely worried about started this journey with a starting fluency of one fact. In the time he has used the program he now has a current fluency of 61 facts and has solved 3,000 facts. On our most recent required end of 9-weeks math testing my class had a 90% pass rate. This project will make a difference in student's lives.
