This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am very grateful to work with such a fantastic group of fourth graders. There are more than six different languages spoken in my classroom alone. These happy, curious, and eager students walk into my classroom every day willing to do their best despite some of the hardships that are happening right outside their front door and in their daily lives.
Our school is an urban public school that services over 800 students from Pre-k to 4th grade.
Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with over 85% of our students receiving free lunch or reduced lunch. Many of our students receive food backpacks each weekend. We offer several clubs and organizations like GirlStart, Sister to Sister, Brother to Brother, Dare to Dream, G.A.P. and Young Leaders of Tomorrow just to name a few. These extracurricular activities promote and encourage academic success as well as foster positive social skills and build meaningful relationships. Our school is also one of the most ethnically diverse schools in the Houston metro area with students who speak a variety of languages. As diverse as our students are economically and culturally, they are diverse in their academics, as well.
My Project
This hands on Fraction kit will help my students compare and generate equivalent fractions a little bit easier. They will not have to rely on their drawings of the fractions. These fraction pieces will give them a better visual of what the drawing should look like. It will also save them time because all they would have to do is get their fraction kit and use the pieces to solve the problem. The 4 pocket chart would be the perfect place for their math vocabulary to be located. It would allow them to have a dedicated place for their math vocabulary cards to be located.

Hurricane Harvey may have interrupted our school year but it did not stop our desire to learn all we can in school.
