Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a diverse group of inner-city students at a Title I school in grades K-8. All of our students are eligible for free lunch. Many families are struggling financially with families living in overcrowded homes and there are some who are homeless and tough family situations. Several of the students are English language learners while some are new to the school.
Our students thrive while participating in hands-on activities, therefore instilling a love of learning.
My second grade students need to manipulate objects to make sense of math concepts and to help them learn actively. Distance learning has been difficult for this population and age group. Whiteboards will help in a variety of ways, including demonstrating understanding.
Our students are eager to learn and are grateful for the opportunities they are provided. They are a community of learners who support each other in the learning process.
My Project
These manipulatives will make distance learning from home more interactive. Students at this age may have some difficulty developmentally with abstract ideas of regrouping unless there is a visual component. They need to touch and manipulate objects to help them make meaning.
Students need to count by 1ś, 5ś, 10ś, and 100ś and calculate related math facts.
They use the 10 frames to trade out ten ones. They also trade out 10 tens for 100. They break apart and put back together. The magnetic number lines can also help them do this.
We also use whiteboards frequently in math, word work, and other subjects for on the spot checks for understanding.
Manipulatives will also help those students with special needs and English learners.
