Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
What is Deaf Education? English, Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading, and support. Teaching through sign, teaching through voice, teaching using both. But we must always remember, that while they are not the cookie cutter form, they are all English language learners.
Seventy percent of our students are Hispanic and in homes where Spanish is the only language spoken or used; they are faced with deciphering Spanish at home and learning English at school, while still trying to maintain their skills in the language they truly need...sign language.
We are the high school part of a Regional Day School Program for the Deaf with a team of 5 teachers, sharing 2 small rooms, devoted to our students and ensuring they leave us being successful young adults. Several of our students are self-contained most of the day. They are eager to learn and love being active. We are always looking for new ways to get them out of their seats, moving around, and engaged in hands-on learning.
My Project
We are in need of math manipulatives in our classroom. Some of my students need basic calculators to complete their math work. Other students need counting blocks to complete their work. We all need flashcards to strengthen our skills in math fact work. When we correct our work it's always done in a different color; sadly, some of my students don't always have the pens and supplies they need.
I want to provide all needed supplies for the students...calculators, pens, rulers, tape measure, counting blocks, flash cards, etc.
With these items, we will be able to move through class smoothly. We are in a portable and are currently in need of a space heater as well. These cold days have hit our portable hard and it has been difficult at times to work when our hands are cold.
All of the supplies are much needed and will be very much appreciated.
