Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work at a Title 1 public high school in Manhattan. We are a fashion school so many students are very visual and kinesthetic learners. Our students are so extremely talented and motivated in their fashion and art classes, despite coming from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Unfortunately math doesn’t always come easy to them and many students tend to lose interest quickly or get defeated right off the bat. I am introducing Quadratics as my next lesson in my Algebra classes and would love to use Algebra tiles and other manipulatives to get students more engaged and invested in the learning process.
My Project
These manipulatives will help students feel engaged with the mathematics. It will allow each student to feel like an active learner and make the connections necessary to show mastery. As fashion and art students, they will be able to create visual representations of abstract concepts, like factoring. Students will then we able to engage in more in depth discussions with one another. These materials lend themselves to class differentiation and provide equal access to the content material. Lastly, it will allow for a growth mindset for students and give them a sense of ownership with a subject they may never have had before.
