I teach students with mental disabilities at the high school level. The math in our curriculum is based on daily life tasks, such as measurement, money, time, cooking, etc. Many of our students learn through touch and manipulation, and have good success if they are taught using manipulatives. However, at the high school level, we are not provided with manipulative tools for teaching math, since most math taught at the high school level outside of this curriculum and is much more abstract. Fractions and decimals are used throughout the curriculum. They are used when we talk about money; wages and pay; elapsed time; cooking measurements; adjusting recipes; linear, area and volume measurements; taxes; gratuities; and mileages. Base ten blocks and fraction towers are very helpful to introduce and reinforce fraction and decimal concepts. Once students understand these concepts using these models, it is much easier to apply these concepts to a specific life skills task. These tools will be used repeatedly throughout the curriculum. It is very important to me that my students understand these math concepts, so that they will be able to live and work independently. The materials I have requested will help to solidify these mathematical concepts, and help my students apply them in more abstract ways in real-life situations.
