Help me give my students math manipulatives
Most of my students are visual and kinesthetic learners; having lab materials will make the lessons more engaging for them.
I teach at a Title I, low-income, urban school. Our students have many diverse needs. All students at this school receive free lunch. Over three-quarters of my students are English learners and many have just come to the country
I work daily with these students to create a learning environment that takes them away from their day-to-day struggles and submerges them into a world of so many possibilities and experiences.
Many of my students may never leave the city of Central Falls and lack the real-life experiences needed to build background knowledge.
Despite the difficulties my kids face each day, they are eager to learn.
They work hard and try their best. They are my heroes, and I love being their teacher! Our staff is remarkable. We offer support to our students and their families before, during, and after school hours. The dedication of every person working at our school is amazing. We truly care about our students and work tirelessly to help them achieve against some pretty heavy odds.
My Project
These supplies will help make math interesting and engaging for them. I am looking for math games and math manipulatives that students can use as lesson extensions, projects, and at-home use.
I want my students to have a hands-on approach in their learning as many are visual and kinesthetic learners.
Here are some reasons why I want the manipulatives for my students.
1. Math manipulatives help make abstract ideas concrete; manipulatives give students ways to construct physical models of abstract mathematical ideas.
2. Math manipulatives lift math off textbook pages. Ideas exist in children's minds, and manipulatives help them construct an understanding of ideas that they can then connect to mathematical vocabulary and symbols.
3. Math manipulatives build students' confidence by giving them a way to test and confirm their reasoning.
4. Math manipulatives are useful tools for solving problems; manipulative materials serve as concrete models for students to use to solve problems.
