This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My kindergarten kiddos are full of unique personalities and are eager to learn. Creative, funny, dramatic, and mysterious; our students come from diverse backgrounds: 20% homeless, 47% struggle with reading and writing, and 23% receive special education services.
My students are energetic, curious, and ready to learn; however, not having enough math technology programs thwarts this process because many of the activities needed to facilitate this learning require adaptive learning programs.
Lack of materials should not prevent them from getting what they need.
My Project
I believe that the use of manipulatives helps students hone their mathematical thinking skills, and can help students connect ideas and integrate their math knowledge so that they gain a deeper understanding of number sense and mathematical concepts. I understand that manipulatives are not toys but are powerful learning tools which build conceptual understanding of mathematics; and allow young learners to make sense of mathematical concepts and reasoning.
Research has shown that instructional use of manipulatives in classrooms provide sustained learning opportunities for young mathematicians and students progress through varying levels of proficiency when they use manipulatives through guided instruction.
