This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"There should be no such thing as boring mathematics." -Edsger Dijkstra
Often math is taught only through rote memorization which often leads to a dislike of math and little understanding. My students need manipulatives to make math exciting and help them develop a deep understanding of math.
My third-grade students attend an inner-city Title I school where all receive free breakfast and lunch.
Most of my students struggle with knowing and understanding their basic math skills. They lack a strong sense and understanding of numbers. My goal is to strengthen their math skills and help them develop a love of mathematics so they will have an opportunity in the future to achieve and obtain one of the many professional jobs that often go unfilled due to lack of qualified applicants.
My Project
Cuisenaire rods will be used to help students truly understand fractions. They will help strengthen students understanding of equivalent fractions and addition and subtraction of fractions.
The dominoes and dice will be used to help students build knowledge and fluency in place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Students will also work collaboratively in centers to continue building a greater understanding of math.
Most of all, my students will be learning mathematics in a fun and meaningful manner.
Donations to Math Manipulatives Mania will improve my classroom by allowing my students to work with a variety of math manipulatives as they gain a deep understanding of mathematical concepts.
