The students at our school come from all eight wards of Washington DC. They represent a diversity of ethnic and economic backgrounds. As a school, we value the diversity of our student body and we seek to encourage deep thinking about our subject areas through collaborative work.
Though they come from many different backgrounds, students at WLPCS form a strong community of learners and problem-solvers.
They are eager to learn and able to work with students who are very different from themselves. In our math classroom, we focus on problem-solving, working together, and perseverance.
My Project
These manipulatives will help my students gain a deep conceptual understanding of mathematics. All students benefit from the opportunity to tangibly "play" with the mathematics they are learning, but giving kids this opportunity requires tools!
Sixth grade is an important year of mathematical learning and these manipulatives will help to ensure that my students gain deep understanding of foundational math concepts.
The geometry shapes will allow students to master concepts like surface area and volume, while the fraction multipliers will help them visualize the process of multiplying fractions by other fractions. Our classroom is based on inquiry and open-ended problem solving and these tools will enable students to do just that.
