Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember how frustrating it is when you don't understand something everyone else does? I work at a title 1 school with students who are struggling with math. Many of them are 2 or more years behind. And for many of them English is not their first language.
My students are amazing.
They are extremely kind, caring and smart children. They want to do well and they have a very strong work ethic. They just need a little extra attention, help and resources.
The school I work at is a Title 1 school in Colorado that mainly serves a Hispanic community. However, our school is very diverse. Many languages are spoken and there is a wide range of backgrounds. The families are very supportive and love their children immensely, however many of them do not have the time or resources to help their children academically.
My Project
I will be working with struggling students in a small group setting. I am extremely fortunate to be able to see small groups of students each day. We will have a very intense curriculum to help our students catch up. However engaging practice is extremely important. I have requested 4 math machines that will give students practice in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. These will give students instant feedback in an activity that is engaging and at their level. I have also requested Math Dot Cards for multiplication to again give them and engaging activity with instant feedback. And finally I asked for Place Value Flip chart. Number sense is extremely important in filling gaps that students missed in the general ed classroom. I will be using these to help students create and break down large numbers. This is a vital skill students need to be fluent in to be successful in math.
This is a chance to directly effect the lives of students in need.
I promise to use these manipulatives routinely and they will help my students grow. Many of my students are in a tough situation but have so much potential. They are strong, smart and willing to work. Please help us out. Thank you.
