Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are eager learners, who celebrate each other's strengths, and help each other out. As an elementary Special Education Resource and Co-Teacher, I have been given the opportunity to work with students as support in the classroom (Co-Teach) and provide small group pull out teaching in my classroom (Resource). Although the bulk of my math students are in the 3rd and 4th grade, I serve K, 1st, and 2nd as well.
My students thrive when new learning opportunities are presented to them in multiple modalities.
My students are part of a larger community in our school that are Visible Learners, and understand that goal setting is an integral part of learning. They access the TEKS and general education content in a variety of ways that require math manipulatives, games, along with learning through technology. Each day my students come ready to actively engage and stretch their math skills and knowledge. This project will expand modalities and options for them to continue their elementary learning adventure.
My Project
The multiple varieties of math manipulatives will give my students a chance for visual and tactile exploration of math concepts. Fractions come to life when they are able to use fraction pieces in bars and circles and compare parts. Coins are easier to count in hands than on a worksheet. Shapes come to life in two dimensional and three dimensional models that they can more easily identify. Base ten pieces become more representational when you can manipulate the pieces. Finally, dice in dice can be used in so many different ways from addition and subtraction, to multiplication and division, along with making math games more interesting and raising the level of understanding.
