My students live in an urban area and many of them come from low-income families. This year, I have 36 wonderful five-year olds! The school has grades K4-5th. My students are young, easily engaged, and enthusiastic about school. They are well-behaved and ready to learn how to read! They love working on computers, singing songs, making projects, and helping each other learn.
Our school has limited resources, and many families cannot afford basic school supplies needed each year.
The students only get gym, music, and art once per week. The students work so hard and appreciate everything they get!
My Project
My fantastic kindergarten students will use these math manipulatives to help them count objects, learn addition, and subtraction. They will learn to count groups of objects up to twenty, sorting into groups of five. Students will have a choice of which manipulatives to use when counting.
Addition and subtraction are important skills in kindergarten and fun, colorful counters help keep them engaged while learning.
Students can choose which type of counter they want to create their own addition and subtraction story problems. These tools will engage the students when they use other math strategies such as a number line, ten frame, and number bond. They will choose a math counter that they like, count out a group and write the number. Another activity will be addition. They will roll a dice and create two groups of math counters. They might choose animals and cars, for example, and then add them all up. The visual aid will help them see how small groups turn into one big group when you add them together. Then they will write an addition equation to match their math story.
The manipulatives will also be used so students learn sorting, colors, and categories.
