The use of manipulatives in teaching mathematics has a solid research history. Manipulatives are concrete objects that can be physically handled by students in order to demonstrate or model abstract concepts.
Using our hands as a tool for leaning is so much more effective than just pencil and paper.
I have a class of diverse learners with diverse needs.
These math manipulatives will allow me to meet the needs of all my students regardless of their learning style. Most importantly, these math manipulatives have the advantage of engaging students and increasing both interest in and enjoyment of mathematics.
My Project
My students will use the math manipulatives to supplement and enrich their math lessons. After I teach a math lesson, the students will work independently to complete their assignments. Those students who require more help or require more challenge will come work with me in a small group while the rest of the students use the math manipulatives to enrich what they have just learned. Some of the math manipulatives include Magna Tiles, PlayStix, Magnetic tens-frames, and Pattern Blocks.
With the integration of these math manipulatives into our daily math lessons, my students learning will be enriched as well as fun and engaging.
The students will have a hands-on approach to learning which will provide students with powerful learning in mathematics.
