This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are low- to middle-class African- and Latino-Americans with a tremendous thirst for knowledge. Our school is one of the last predominantly African-American traditional public schools in LAUSD.
We want to help make our students successful in and out of the classroom.
Although many of our students don't live in the most ideal family situations, they come to school and take in as much as they can. Their home situations are not always conducive to learning what they need to learn, so we must provide the learning atmosphere they need to be successful.
My Project
Math is better learned when students can visualize and manipulate objects to solve problems. Going from tangible concrete concepts to inyangible abstract ones using symbols is always more productive. Students can grasp the concept easier.
These math manipulatives will allow me to teach a lesson and show with manipulatives on the magnetic white board while students have their own set at their desks.
It will allow students to learn a concept and then show their understanding with the same objects. This will help my students become better problem solvers.
The fact that these manipulatives are jumbo and magnetic makes it engaging for the kids. They will want to touch them, and therefore, the learning will stick.
