This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come from a variety of socioeconomic, ethnic, religious, and academic backgrounds and come together to learn to be internationally minded. They have large aspirations, and it is my goal to help start them out on the best path possible for their future.
My students need multiple hands-on opportunities to assist them in fully understanding the why behind mathematics.
I strive to have my classroom be a place where students are excited, and be filled with acceptance and kindness. A classroom where all students are happy and excited to enter is what I aspire to achieve each year.
My Project
My students enjoy exploring new math concepts in our 4th grade class class, including place value, multiplication, fractions and decimals. Fourth grade is a year of great transition, where many of the math concepts taught are abstract. The use of math manipulatives are a game changer for many of my students.
Math manipulatives allow students to gain hands-on experience while practicing new concepts, allowing these abstract ideas to become more tangible.
Using the Hands-On Math Teaching Kit for Grades 3-5 and a set of Unifix Cubes will help students to see many math concepts, such as fractions, measurement, and multiplication.
When students are able to actually see a fraction represented in a whole and as well as its parts, what each place value represents, and what 8 groups of 9 looks like in units of tens and ones, math becomes more attainable and comprehensible for students struggling to understand its abstract concepts.
