This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students enjoy learning about new math topics, but most of the work comes from textbooks or handouts. The students need more hands-on activities to captivate their attention.
My students attend an urban school that consists mostly of low-income African American students.
Many of the students live in single-parent households, and they often do not have supplies for class. The students enjoy learning new concepts. However, their home lives prevent them from completing work outside of school.
My Project
I am requesting hands-on manipulatives for the students to have during their math class when we review geometric figures and shapes. If the students can create the shapes with models or K'Nex links, they will be able to hold the shape in their hands. This will develop a deeper understanding of the concept. I am also requesting dice for the students to practice algebraic functions because many of the students are kinesthetic learners who do not understand the steps when it is only available on paper. My students need hands-on manipulatives such as solid figures, dominoes, and dice to practice creating and identifying geometric shapes.
Our school has not been successful when it comes to standardized tests, and our students are beginning to feel discouraged about their performance.
We need to try everything we can to motivate our students to learn the material. The hands-on manipulatives will enable the students to create the objects and bring them up to a higher level of thinking.
