My students need cuisenaire rods and a set of base ten blocks to help them be successful in pre-algebra.
Remember being in math class and feeling like it was a foreign language? My students also feel this especially when learning abstract math concepts. They forget about their anxieties when math is more hands on. What better way to do this then with math manipulatives.
My students receive special education services.
They have struggled for years to be successful in math and are making some gains. They love hands on learning which helps them retain and understand information through kinesthetic work. Having these manipulative would greatly increase their understanding and spark their interest.
I recently went to a multisensory math training. I was fortunate enough to use cuisenaire rods and base ten blocks during the training. I felt like a genius when I was able to add, subtract, divide, multiply and even solve algebraic equations in a matter of second. I felt like a genius! I want all my students to have the same feeling and have pride in knowing that they can finally say "Math is easy" or even better for them to say "Math is fun!"
I believe that these manipulative will make a tremendous difference in my students lives.
Being success in math will open a whole new world for them. They may even consider pursuing some occupation that they once thought were unattainable.
