Aloha! I teach at an urban elementary school rich with diversity. Students come from across the world to live in beautiful Hawaii Nei. The majority of my students come from the Pacific Islands and are of low socioeconomic status.
In our classroom, we are an ohana.
I want my students to love school, feel comfortable, and most importantly, feel safe. My students love learning through hands-on, engaging activities. In our classroom, I provide students with choices for learning and encourage their inner leaders.
My Project
With this project, I will be able to rotate games in the math center each quarter for the entire year. Students use the math center during group rotations or when they are finished with their work every day.
A math center provides an opportunity for students to practice and apply skills and strategies taught within the classroom.
Students will benefit from this project by having hands-on math games and manipulatives that reinforce what we are learning each quarter. Activities such as jigsaw puzzles, patterning, and number matching build number sense, help us make predictions, and problem-solving skills. Currently, I have limited options of materials for the math center, and what I do have has been well-loved throughout the past 20+ years. This project will help me rejuvenate the math center so that it is a desirable place for continued learning!
