My school is one of the most truly diverse public schools in New Orleans and provides a real reflection of the city and its people. Students come from all over the city to join together at our campus. It offers a Montessori program too. We are able to free the child's potential and aim for lasting peace and a love for learning.
My classroom is unique; it is an all kindergarten version of an early childhood Montessori classroom.
However, I am AMS Early Childhood certified and incorporate and use as much of the Montessori practices and ideology as possible. We have practical life, sensorial, language/reading, math, science, geography, and cultural studies areas in the classroom. During work time, the students are free to choose and receive lessons in all areas.
Ms. J is my fabulous TA, and we are a community above all. We emphasize respecting and taking care of one another. Our students' curiosities are bursting at the seams, and, luckily, we are encouraged as teachers to invest in our students' interests.
My Project
For these 25 Kindergarten students, math is more than just a numbers game. Math has many dimensions, including: number sense, geometry, measurement, math language and spatial relations.
I watch these young children in the classroom and am surprised at the number of ways that math is expressed, in words and in actions.
This funding project supports math concepts and gives concrete representation to their mathematically minded questions and inquiries.
Let's show how much math matters and can be interconnected to these 25 Kindergarten students. Give these students: dominoes for number sense and operation problems, comparision (more, less, & equal to) work, numeral and quantity self-correcting puzzles, learning resource counters, magnetic geometric shapes, bean counters and animal word problem models. With your help, we can have the math mania unfold!!
