This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach in a Title I school and our school population consists of approximately 93% free and reduced-price lunch participants. The beginning of this school year has been an eventful one. Hurricane Harvey has affected our students by missing 3 days of school instruction.
When I look at my students, I see endless possibilities.
The kindergarten students that I teach come to school very eager to learn. My classroom consists of several students that are mainstreamed from the special education classroom. Other students have attended prekindergarten, however, they are still struggling learners. Several other students have not had any formal education and this school year is their first school experience.
My Project
My students and I are requesting hands-on activities to help them master basic concepts such as counting, addition, and subtraction. In my kindergarten class, the students range in age from 5 to 7 years old. This is an age where they learn best by touching and manipulating. The resources I am asking for include a complete set of Building Math Skills Listening Centers, twenty Dot & Learn Addition Journals, a Subtraction Instant Learning Center, a Making Ten Instant Learning Center, and Self-Inking Math Stamps.
I teach my students never to say "I can't" and instead say, "I'll try." The requested items will help my students who struggle with understanding addition and subtraction by helping them to understand the concept of the problem and not just reciting math facts.
By providing additional ways for them to master math skills, they will be prepared to enter first grade with a solid mathematical foundation.
