This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are hard-working students that require extra assistance to be successful and compete with other students at their grade level. Students are two to five grade levels behind other students; however, they are still expected to assimilate and be successful. Students have a great desire to be successful and one day flourish to perform at grade level. But this cannot happen without assistance.
Most students qualify for free breakfast and lunch, and all of them live in homes with unsafe water.
They come to school every day only to struggle just to keep up with the other students. My students are eager to learn but often lack the resources needed to make progress. This center can be their sanctuary from all their daily obstacles in and out of the classroom.
My Project
Everyone needs math especially my Learning Support students. Gifting my students a Write and Wipe Center will provide students with an opportunity to practice and apply skills and strategies taught within the classroom. Allowing me time and opportunity to work with students individually while students are engaged in a purposeful activity with rigor.
Many of my students' math skills are up to five grade levels below their peers.
Therefore, they find it difficult to integrate into a regular general education classroom. I want my students to compete on the same level as all other students, not just in the district, but the entire world. My hope is for my students to work their way from a self-contained classroom to a general education classroom. Most importantly I want students to know they can and will graduate from high school and college.
Learning support students are unique, they have all the desire to learn but need additional support to succeed. Our 25-year-old textbooks just won't do it. A math center allows students to grab an activity, clipboard, marker and find a quiet corner or get a partner to build on their math skills.
If at first, you don’t succeed try, try again. This center will allow students to work at their own level and pace to increase their math skills. Students can work individually or in small groups with hands-on and/or written activities. Students' written activities are in plastic sleeves so it can be wiped down and reused repeatedly until the skill is mastered or to just erase a mistake.
